A school council meets regularly, usually once a week, to discuss
matters of importance in the school. One child from each class is
elected to the council, which is chaired by a member of the teaching
staff. Shortly after the School Council was formed, in 1999, they
canvassed views on play times and found a large majority in favour of
introducing more variety to the games rather than a certain domination
of football! As a result of their discussions, changes were made,
with SASA providing the school with new equipment which they have
regularly renewed since. This initiative led to the interest of
the press and of two local television crews. We even made it to
the front page of the Daily Telegraph!

New members are elected half-yearly and they have developed amongst
other things, a playtime theme with a Playground Charter, and then spent
much time and thought on a Bullying Statement. |

Don't suffer in silence Being bullied hurtsIt can go on and on and
it is hard to stick up for yourself. Bullying can happen in different
ways: Physical - hitting, kicking, taking belongings Verbal - name
calling, insulting, racist remarks, spreading nasty stories, leaving you
out of things Stick up for yourself!
- Be strong
- Tackle the problem with a joke
(e.g "Four eyes" = "all the better to see you with")
- Look the bully in the eye and tell them to stop - fighting back is
not the answer
- Get away as quickly as you can
- Tell an adult straight away
If you are being bullied:
- It is OK to tell a teacher, a grown-up, a councillor and/or your
family
- Keep speaking up until someone listens
- Don't blame yourself for what has happened
Tell Someone:
- What has happened
- How often it has happened
- Who was involved
- Who saw it
- Where it happened

- Look after play equipment and use it properly
